Homeless Veterans on the rise!!
It seems like in every part of the country, the mission is to get homeless veterans off the streets and into the work force. The U.S. Department of Labor is largely behind the efforts. New Orleans companies are hoping hire 600 people in all sorts of industries.
The city held a Veterans Career Fair and Diversity Job Expo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Pontchartrain Center. This is the 2nd one this year in the area. The goal is to directly link job seekers with employers who are hiring. The fair had managers representing 30 different companies, including banks, construction companies, food service, stores and government agencies.
Congressman Steve Scalise (R – LA) organized an event in April knows how crucial the need is.
“We knew that there were going to be a lot of veterans returning home. You know in our area, thousands of military veterans that have served our country in Iraq that were looking to come back home and try to find new opportunities and careers here. Of course, we wanted them to stay here, but we wanted to reach out to the business community to see what kind of interest there was, and it was overwhelming,” Scalise said.
